Hi.
My name is Kyoko. I am a quilter, gardener, wife of R, and a friend of our cat Que ("Q-w-e-y"). She became our family in Jan 2017 at the age of 2 to 3.
I enjoy making items for my handmade shop, Etsy :: momonmo (momonmo is my previous cat's name. She lived for 23 years!).
I came to the US in 2004 from Kyoto, Japan.
To improve my English language, I started to take ESL classes at Northern Virginia Community College in 2012, graduated in 2015, transferred to Hollins University in Roanoke, VA in the same year, graduated in 2018 with a B.S. degree in Psychology (major) and Environmental Science (minor). The 6 years of the college experience in adulthood changed my life forever. I got a better resolution to see the world.
I am a self-taught quilter. I had little sewing experience since childhood because my mother was a dress-maker. She liked 3D projects (clothes, stuffed animals, etc) but I am in love with 2D things such as QUILTS (from large to small - coasters, placemats, and tapestries...), photography, drawings, and cards. I learned how to make quilts from library books. In 2004, after my first encounter with a few beautiful antique quilts exhibited in the American History Museum in D.C., I just had to make quilts. I like to make modern - contemporary - abstract - art quilts.
I used to take quilting jobs from quilters. People called me "a short arm quilter" since I quilt with a regular sewing machine - my first sewing machine was the lowest price ($65 in 2005) Brother until I got a JUKI TL-98 QE. I have one Kenmore and 2 Berninas, all were given by generous quilters, but my love for JUKI has not changed.
I am also a Master Gardener (finished the educational program in 2018), started my organic vegetable garden in 2016 in my backyard. I was familiar with working with soil thanks to my father. He loved to grow plants.
Hope you enjoy my blog.
